Apple Watch vs Galaxy Watch 2026: Which Smartwatch Should You Buy?

By the WhatNotSell team · Updated Price ranges in this guide are typical prices as of the date above and change often. The live prices on this page are current.

Short answer: your phone decides for you. The Apple Watch only works with an iPhone. The Galaxy Watch doesn't work with an iPhone at all (Samsung dropped iPhone support in 2021) and is at its best with a Samsung Galaxy phone. If you use an iPhone, buy an Apple Watch. If you use a Samsung phone, buy a Galaxy Watch. If you use another Android phone, a Galaxy Watch still works well, but a few health features need a Samsung phone.

If you're still choosing your phone, the watch is part of that decision. See our iPhone vs Samsung and Pixel vs iPhone comparisons.

Compatibility: The Deciding Factor

  • Apple Watch + iPhone: required. There's no way to use an Apple Watch with an Android phone.
  • Galaxy Watch + iPhone: not supported. Every Galaxy Watch since the Watch4 (2021) runs Wear OS, which doesn't work with iPhones.
  • Galaxy Watch + non-Samsung Android (Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus): works, but some Samsung Health features, such as ECG and blood pressure tracking, need a Samsung Galaxy phone. If you use a Pixel, the Google Pixel Watch is also worth a look.

If you switch phones between iPhone and Android, you'll have to replace your watch too. For a watch that works with both, look at Garmin or Fitbit. See our best fitness trackers guide.

Health and Fitness Tracking

Apple Watch Series 12 has Apple's new Health Sensing System. It checks heart rate every five seconds and heart rate variability every five minutes, and uses that for a new daily readiness score. It also has sleep scores, ECG, and hypertension notifications, which flag signs of high blood pressure over time. Availability of hypertension notifications depends on regulatory approval in your country. Apple's Fitness app and Activity rings remain the most motivating daily fitness system for most people.

Galaxy Watch 9 has ECG, detailed sleep tracking and coaching, and Samsung's body composition measurement (BIA). It is also the first Galaxy Watch with Hearing Health, which tracks how loud your surroundings and earbuds are. Samsung Health is detailed and free.

Winner: Apple for the most polished health features and fitness motivation. Galaxy for body composition and value.

Battery Life: Galaxy Watch

This is the biggest practical difference after compatibility.

  • Apple Watch Series 12: rated up to 24 hours, so you charge it every day. Fast charging helps: 15 minutes adds up to 12 hours.
  • Galaxy Watch 9: typically lasts longer between charges, often around two days on the larger model with normal use, though heavy GPS and always-on display shorten it.

If you want to track sleep every night without thinking about charging, the Galaxy Watch is easier to live with. On the rugged models, the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 (3–4 days) also outlasts the Apple Watch Ultra 4 (over 2 days).

Winner: Galaxy Watch.

Apps, Design and Everyday Use

Apple Watch: the best app selection and the smoothest experience. It answers calls, texts, Apple Pay, Siri and notifications reliably. Haptics (the taps on your wrist) are the best on any watch. The rectangular design fits more text on screen.

Galaxy Watch: a round, more traditional watch look that fits standard watch bands. Google apps (Maps, Wallet, Gemini) work well, and it's tightly integrated with Samsung phones.

Winner: Apple for apps and polish. Galaxy for classic watch looks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Galaxy Watch work with iPhone?

No. Galaxy Watch models since the Watch4 (2021) run Wear OS and don't support iPhones. Older Tizen-based Galaxy watches had limited iPhone support, but it was discontinued.

Does the Apple Watch work with Android?

No. An Apple Watch must be set up with, and paired to, an iPhone.

Which has better battery life, Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch?

The Galaxy Watch. The Series 12 is rated up to 24 hours, so it needs charging daily. The Galaxy Watch 9 typically lasts around a day and a half to two days.

Is the Apple Watch Series 12 worth it over the SE 3?

If you want the most accurate heart tracking, hypertension notifications, an always-on screen and the newest health features, yes. For basic fitness, notifications and safety features, the SE 3 at around $199–$249 is the better value.

Should I buy the Galaxy Watch 9 or a discounted Galaxy Watch 8?

The Watch 8 was discontinued in July 2026. If you find it well under $250, it's a good deal. The Watch 9 adds a faster chip, slightly bigger batteries and Hearing Health.

Final Recommendation

iPhone users: Apple Watch Series 12 ($399) for the best health tracking, or the SE 3 on sale around $199 for great value.

Samsung phone users: Galaxy Watch 9 (from $379.99) for longer battery and full Samsung Health, or the Galaxy Watch FE ($199) on a budget.

Other Android phones: Galaxy Watch 9 works well, but consider a Pixel Watch (Pixel users) or a Garmin if you want every feature without a Samsung phone.
